Limassol, Cyprus

Agios Nikolaos ton Gaton (St. Nicholas of the Cats) is possibly the oldest monastery chapel, which dates to the 14th century, was abandoned in the 16th century and was reinstated by Orthodox runs in the early 1980s. According to tradition, the monastery was founded by St. Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, who left a piece of wood from the Holy Cross there. During that period Cyprus experienced a severe drought, as a result of which many people fled from the Cape and the area became infested by snakes.
